Demolition begins on the old Potter County District Courts Building

A familiar piece of downtown Amarillo’s skyline is coming down. Demolition has officially begun on the old Potter County District Courts Building, paving the way for a new free parking lot that officials say will improve accessibility and ease congestion near the new courthouse.

Crews are taking down the building in phases—starting from the inside before moving floor-by-floor from the outside. The process is expected to last several months before construction can begin on the parking area, which will include landscaping and ADA-compliant access.

“This project is long overdue,” said Potter County Judge Nancy Tanner. “It’s got some sentimental value to it because I was around when it was built, and I would just think what a pretty building. But the inside of it was just not so good. It’s needed to come down for a long time.”

The demolition is part of an 18-month timeline that includes clearing the site and building the new lot, located between South Fillmore and Pierce Streets. During this time, drivers in the area should expect traffic delays, as surrounding streets are reduced to two lanes.

Funding for the project was already included in the budget for the new Potter County District Courts Building, meaning no additional taxpayer dollars are being requested.
