Amarillo Professional Firefighters Association endorses candidates for 2025 city elections

The Amarillo Professional Firefighters Association (APFFA) Local 542, which represents 278 firefighters dedicated to protecting the community, has officially endorsed candidates for the 2025 mayoral and city council elections.

The association, established in 1937, announced its support for Incumbent Mayor Cole Stanley, Place 1 Candidate Tim Reid, Incumbent Place 2 Don Tipps, Incumbent Place 3 Tom Scherlen, and Incumbent Place 4 Les Simpson. The APFFA highlighted these candidates' consistent support for first responders and their commitment to improving public safety and emergency services in Amarillo.

A History of Support for First Responders

The APFFA’s endorsement comes as a recognition of the leadership these candidates have shown in prioritizing firefighter well-being and enhancing the Amarillo Fire Department (AFD). Under the current administration, the city has made significant improvements in firefighter pay and working conditions, helping Amarillo remain competitive in attracting and retaining top talent.

One of the most notable advancements under this leadership has been the proactive approach to firefighter health and safety. Recognizing that cancer is a leading cause of death among firefighters, the city has implemented annual early detection screenings for all Amarillo firefighters. Additionally, the installation of washers and dryers in fire stations has reduced prolonged exposure to harmful contaminants, a major step in protecting firefighter health.

The APFFA also praised efforts to combat staffing shortages, ensuring the department remains fully equipped to provide the highest level of service. Funding increases have allowed AFD to train Firefighter EMTs to become Firefighter Paramedics, expanding emergency medical response capabilities for Amarillo residents.

Tim Reid: A Strong Addition to the Team

Among the endorsed candidates, the APFFA expressed particular enthusiasm for Place 1 candidate Tim Reid, whose extensive background in law enforcement gives him a deep understanding of first responder challenges. The association believes Reid’s leadership will further strengthen policies that enhance public safety and support emergency personnel.

Encouraging Community Support

With the 2025 elections approaching, the APFFA is urging citizens to support these candidates, emphasizing the importance of leadership that prioritizes the safety, health, and well-being of Amarillo’s residents and first responders.

"These candidates have demonstrated unwavering commitment to our firefighters and the people of Amarillo," the APFFA stated. "Their leadership has already led to critical improvements, and we believe their continued service will ensure an even brighter future for our community."

The association encourages all Amarillo residents to participate in the upcoming election and make their voices heard in shaping the city’s future.
