Governor Greg Abbott comments on Trump’s deportation plans, border security

During a press conference on Wednesday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott addressed several pressing topics, including President-elect Donald Trump’s plans for immigration and border security. Abbott was asked about the controversial "mass deportations" proposed by Trump following his win in the 2024 presidential election.

Abbott clarified that any deportation program in Texas would focus on criminal illegal immigrants, emphasizing the state's priority on removing individuals who pose a threat to public safety. “President Trump will provide the safest border in Texas history,” Abbott stated confidently, signaling his full support for the incoming administration’s efforts to curb illegal immigration and enhance border security.

The governor further explained that such measures could result in significant cost savings for Texas. The state currently spends substantial resources on border security through initiatives like Operation Lone Star, which has been in place to combat drug smuggling, human trafficking, and illegal crossings. Abbott suggested that, with improved federal support and enforcement under Trump, Texas could repurpose some of those funds for other state priorities. “Texas will have the opportunity to consider repurposing some of that money,” he said.

As Abbott prepares for the upcoming 2025 legislative session, which will begin on January 14, he is expected to introduce several measures aimed at fortifying the state’s border security and addressing the broader immigration issues. With the Republican-led Texas Legislature set to convene, Abbott's remarks underscore his commitment to collaborating with both federal and state lawmakers to strengthen Texas’ position on immigration enforcement.

Abbott’s statements come at a time of heightened scrutiny over immigration policy, particularly as the U.S. faces a surge in illegal border crossings. His position aligns closely with Trump’s hardline stance on immigration, though it remains to be seen how these federal plans will be implemented in Texas and what impact they will have on the state’s resources and communities.

The 89th Texas Legislature will convene on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, with a packed agenda on border security, immigration reform, and other key issues shaping the state's future.
