So much for a short-week hangover.

Coming off an emotional victory over Abilene High just six days earlier, the Amarillo High Sandies had every excuse to come out a little flat Thursday night at Dick Bivins Stadium.

Instead, they came out swinging.

Behind a ball-hawking defense, a punishing ground attack and another steady offensive performance, Amarillo High rolled past Frenship 41-14, punching its ticket to the playoffs and securing a first-round postseason game at home.

And the Sandies made sure there was never much doubt about the outcome.

Amarillo High improved to 7-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in District 2-5A Division I, looking every bit like the team to beat.

Defense Sets the Tone Early

The Sandies didn't waste time making life miserable for Frenship quarterback James Ordonez.

Amarillo High intercepted three passes in the opening quarter, turning every takeaway into a touchdown.

Creed Cavalier got the party started with a 22-yard pick-six after linebacker Noah Flores pressured Ordonez into a bad throw.

Moments later, Raider Payne snagged another interception, setting up a 4-yard touchdown run by Sy Richardson.

Then came Deuce Patterson's interception deep in Amarillo High territory.

Rather than simply escaping trouble, the Sandies marched 97 yards downfield, finishing the drive with Payne's 4-yard touchdown run.

Just like that, Amarillo High was rolling.

By halftime, the Sandies had built a commanding 27-0 lead, leaving Frenship searching for answers.

Richardson Keeps the Chains Moving

While the defense grabbed the spotlight early, Richardson made sure the Sandies' offense kept humming.

The hard-running back finished with a game-high 145 yards on 23 carries, scoring twice and consistently finding room behind Amarillo High's offensive line.

His second touchdown, a 12-yard run in the second quarter, helped put the Tigers in an even deeper hole.

Payne was another difference-maker.

The versatile standout contributed on both sides of the football, finishing with 55 rushing yards and two touchdowns on eight carries while also making a key interception.

Sophomore quarterback Skipworth Callaway quietly put together another solid outing, completing 20 of 30 passes for 181 yards without throwing an interception.

No Second-Half Letdown

Frenship briefly showed signs of life after halftime when Ordonez connected with Maddux Archibald for a 9-yard touchdown.

But Amarillo High wasn't interested in making things interesting.

Callaway answered with a 21-yard touchdown strike to Landon Barker, pushing the advantage to 34-7 and effectively shutting down any comeback hopes.

The Sandies' defense also recorded six sacks, making it a long night for Frenship's offense despite receiver Noah Gonzales collecting eight catches for 109 yards.

Bigger Goals Ahead

The victory guarantees Amarillo High a playoff berth and a home postseason opener, but the Sandies aren't finished.

With wins over their closest district challengers and remaining games against Lubbock High and Caprock, Amarillo High is firmly in control of its district championship destiny.

The scary part for future opponents?

This team still believes it can get better.

With the playoffs approaching, the Sandies are playing confident, physical football on both sides of the ball.

And if Thursday night proved anything, it's that Amarillo High isn't simply happy to make the postseason.

The Sandies are looking to make some serious noise once they get there.
