The City of Canyon has announced the hiring of James Stow as its new Parks Director, bringing an experienced parks and recreation professional to the city following the retirement of longtime director Brian Noel.

Stow is expected to officially join the city's staff in mid-November, taking over the department after Noel's 16 years of service to the Canyon community.

Stow comes to Canyon from the City of Amarillo, where he has served as Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation since 2023. His background also includes more than two decades of experience working at area golf courses, dating back to 2003.

“Parks bring people together, and I look forward to helping create spaces where the Canyon community can gather, have fun, and make memories,” Stow said.

Stow also shared his enthusiasm about becoming part of the Canyon community, saying he enjoys golfing, grilling and spending time with his family when he isn't working.

In addition to his professional experience, Stow holds several certifications, including Certified Public Manager, Certified Park and Recreation Professional and Certified Pool Operator.

City officials believe his experience in Amarillo will help make the leadership transition a smooth one.

“James’ most recent work experience has been in significant leadership roles with the Amarillo Parks Department,” said Jon Behrens, Canyon's Assistant City Manager overseeing the Parks Department.

“I have no doubt his experiences in Amarillo will allow him to plug right into our Parks Department and implement his vision quickly. James will be a great asset to our leadership team here in Canyon.”

Stow's arrival marks a new chapter for Canyon's Parks Department following Noel's retirement. With years of experience in parks management and recreation, Stow will soon begin overseeing the city's parks operations and helping shape the department's future.
