The West Texas A&M Buffaloes gave their Homecoming crowd plenty to celebrate Saturday evening, putting together their most explosive offensive performance of the season in a 69-14 blowout victory over Western New Mexico at Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium.

The Buffs (3-5, 3-3 LSC) were firing on all cylinders, piling up 706 yards of offense while delivering big plays on both sides of the football. From a fast start in the opening quarter to a fourth-quarter scoring frenzy, WT controlled the game from start to finish.

And for Buffalo fans, it was quite a show.

Buffs Waste No Time Taking Control

WT wasted little time establishing its dominance.

Tory Simmons opened the game with a 16-yard run, setting the tone for an offense that would have its way with the Mustangs throughout the evening.

The opening possession ended with Contae Cason punching in a two-yard touchdown run. Instead of settling for the extra point, the Buffs pulled off a fake, with James Ingham taking the snap and finding the end zone for a two-point conversion.

Just like that, WT led 8-0.

The Buffalo defense quickly forced a three-and-out, and quarterback Ryan Gafford went right back to work.

Gafford connected with Trace Clarkson on a beautiful 23-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 15-0.

Moments later, Quincy Eutsay intercepted a Western New Mexico pass, giving WT another scoring opportunity. Cason capitalized with an 11-yard touchdown run, sending the Buffs into the second quarter with a commanding 22-0 advantage.

Defense Joins the Scoring Party

Western New Mexico finally got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter with a 12-yard touchdown pass, but the Buffs quickly answered in an unusual way.

After Ingham pinned the Mustangs at their own three-yard line with a terrific punt, Campbell Packebush broke through the offensive line and tackled the running back in the end zone for a safety.

The two points pushed WT's lead to 24-7.

Alan Anaya later drilled a 38-yard field goal, sending the Buffaloes into halftime leading 27-7.

Second-Half Stampede

If the Mustangs hoped to mount a comeback after halftime, Simmons had other plans.

The WT running back took over the opening scoring drive of the third quarter, accounting for all 54 yards before breaking loose for an 18-yard touchdown.

Cason followed with one of the night's most impressive runs, powering through defenders on a 28-yard touchdown to complete his three-score performance.

Western New Mexico briefly answered with a 57-yard touchdown run, but Colt Mercer connected with Joseph White on a 32-yard scoring strike to give WT a 48-14 lead heading into the fourth.

Macon Steals the Spotlight

The fourth quarter belonged to Reid Macon.

Making the most of his opportunity, Macon threw touchdown passes on the first two attempts of his college career.

His first went to Juwan Jones for a 20-yard score. His second was a perfectly placed 29-yard touchdown to Antoine Sullivan.

But Macon wasn't finished.

Following an interception by Anthony White, the Amarillo native broke free on a spectacular 70-yard touchdown run, putting the finishing touches on WT's 69-14 victory.

It was the kind of performance Buffalo fans won't soon forget.

For a WT team that has experienced its share of struggles this season, Saturday's victory provided a much-needed boost.

The offense was explosive, the defense created opportunities, and the Buffs showed what they can accomplish when everything comes together.

More importantly, WT returned to the win column in convincing fashion while improving to .500 in Lone Star Conference play.

Homecoming victories are always special, but this one was something else.

The Buffs didn't just win. They put on a show in Canyon.
