Several major highway projects are moving forward across the Amarillo area as the Texas Department of Transportation continues work aimed at improving safety and traffic flow throughout the region.
The projects range from the massive expansion of Interstate 27 between Amarillo and Canyon to new turn lanes, traffic signals, pedestrian improvements and bridge work. TxDOT also has several additional projects planned, although construction timelines have not yet been established.
I-27 expansion between Amarillo and Canyon
The largest project underway is the $312 million expansion of I-27 to six lanes between Amarillo and Canyon.
Crews recently completed several traffic switches as concrete paving work progressed between McCormick Road and Country Club Road.
The I-27 project is expected to continue for more than two years, with completion currently scheduled for the end of 2028.
Soncy Road improvements continue toward Canyon
Drivers along FM 2590, better known as Soncy Road, are also seeing significant changes as part of a $28 million project stretching from State Loop 335 to U.S. 60 in Canyon.
Crews recently completed the initial traffic signal phase at the FM 2219/Lair Road intersection. New signals were installed at Hunsley Road earlier this year, while the traffic lights at U.S. 60 were upgraded to accommodate a left-turn lane.
Additional traffic signals are planned at Country Club/Buffalo Stadium Road and McCormick Road.
That project is expected to be completed in early 2027.
Safety work underway along Business I-40
Another $30 million project is targeting Business I-40 between Hope Road and Southwest Ninth Avenue.
Crews are working on reduced conflict U-turn intersections, commonly known as RCUTs, along with pavement upgrades, drainage improvements and work to bring areas into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Construction is expected to wrap up in early 2027.
Washington Street getting pedestrian and traffic upgrades
Work is also continuing along FM 1541, or Washington Street, where TxDOT is making approximately $11 million in improvements.
Current construction includes shared-use paths, new illumination along the east side of the roadway and traffic signals at the Loop 335 intersection. TxDOT says the work is intended to improve safety, mobility and connectivity for motorists and other travelers.
The Washington Street project is scheduled for completion in summer 2027.
More Amarillo-area projects are coming
TxDOT is also planning several additional projects around Amarillo.
Future work includes construction of Loop 335 main lanes from FM 2186 to just north of Arden Road, rehabilitation of the Hughes Street bridge and ADA improvements along RM 1061/Tascosa Road between Business I-40 and an area north of Coulter Street.
Construction timelines for those projects have not yet been established.
“Upgrading the safety and mobility of our major roadways, including FM and RM roads is paramount for TxDOT,” Amarillo Area Engineer Clint Harms, P.E., said. “These projects showcase that commitment to safer roads for the traveling public as the Texas Panhandle continues to grow.”
For drivers, the projects mean construction zones will remain a familiar sight around Amarillo and Canyon for the foreseeable future. TxDOT is asking motorists to slow down and use caution while traveling through active work zones.
