District volleyball races across the Texas Panhandle are starting to take shape, and several area teams made big statements over the weekend. Canyon survived a five-set battle with West Plains, Randall stayed unbeaten in league play and Amarillo High extended one of the most impressive district winning streaks around.

Canyon Outlasts West Plains in Five-Set Rivalry Battle

Canyon looked ready to make quick work of rival West Plains on Saturday afternoon, but the Lady Wolves had other ideas.

The Lady Eagles eventually escaped the Wolves Gym with a five-set victory, winning 25-17, 25-15, 21-25, 17-25, 15-4 to complete a perfect opening week in District 4-4A.

Canyon controlled the first two sets before West Plains came roaring back. The Lady Wolves grabbed the third set 25-21 and followed with a 25-17 win in the fourth to force a decisive fifth.

That was when Canyon slammed the door.

The Lady Eagles regained control and dominated the final set 15-4, improving to 20-6 overall and 2-0 in district play. West Plains fell to 16-12 and 1-1 in district.

Senior Laney Jones was all over the court for Canyon, hammering a team-high 20 kills while adding 25 digs for a double-double. Klair Stone delivered another double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs, while Brylee McElroy kept the offense moving with 29 assists.

Teagan Hudson paced West Plains with 12 kills and 15 digs, while Idaly Sotelo turned in a huge defensive performance with 37 digs.

Randall Stays Perfect in District With Sweep of Pampa

Randall isn't giving Canyon any room to breathe at the top of the District 4-4A standings.

The Lady Raiders rolled past Pampa in straight sets Saturday, winning 25-16, 25-20, 25-21 to improve to 24-5 overall and 2-0 in district.

Sophomore Chloe Brown continued her terrific start to district play with her second consecutive double-double. Brown finished with 12 kills and 17 digs to lead another balanced Randall performance.

Amber Matthews added plenty of punch at the net with 11 kills.

Pampa dropped to 16-12 overall and 0-2 in district, while Randall remained right alongside Canyon at the top of the standings.

Amarillo High Pushes District Winning Streak to 73

Another district match, another Amarillo High victory.

The Lady Sandies extended their remarkable district winning streak to 73 consecutive matches Saturday by cruising past Lubbock High 25-11, 25-9, 25-15.

Amarillo High improved to 20-8 overall and sits alone atop the District 3-5A standings at 6-0.

Harper Vaughan and Brenna Seideman provided plenty of offense with 10 kills apiece as the Lady Sandies controlled the match from beginning to end. Ansley Davis added 13 assists.

At this point, beating Amarillo High in district play has become more than just another match on the schedule. It's a challenge nobody has solved in a long time.

Frenship Keeps Pressure on Amarillo High

Frenship made sure Amarillo High couldn't create any more separation in the District 3-5A race.

The Lady Tigers swept Caprock 25-16, 25-8, 25-17 to improve to 21-10 overall and 5-1 in district, keeping them just one game behind the Lady Sandies.

Reese Roberts was a force at the net. She finished with a double-double of 15 kills and 12 blocks, giving Caprock problems on both sides of the ball.

With Amarillo High sitting at 6-0 and Frenship at 5-1, the Lady Tigers remain very much in the hunt as the district schedule rolls along.

Tascosa Remains One Game Back of Lady Sandies

Don't forget about Tascosa in the District 3-5A race.

The Lady Rebels stayed within striking distance of first-place Amarillo High by sweeping Frenship Memorial 25-19, 26-24, 25-22 on Friday.

Tascosa improved to 15-13 overall and 5-1 in district play, putting the Lady Rebels alongside Frenship and just one game behind Amarillo High.

Presley Ward delivered a big all-around performance with 15 kills and 16 digs for a double-double.

With Amarillo High leading the way at 6-0 and both Tascosa and Frenship sitting at 5-1, the battle near the top of District 3-5A is setting up to be one worth watching.
