A halftime normally lasts about 20 minutes. Tascosa and Frenship got one that lasted nearly two days.

By the time the Rebels finally walked away from Dick Bivins Stadium on Saturday afternoon, they had survived lightning, a postponed second half, troublesome snaps, a late Frenship rally and one final two-point conversion attempt.

Somehow, Tascosa came out of all of it with a 28-27 victory and, more importantly, a 1-0 start in District 2-5A Division I.

The game began Thursday night but didn't end until Saturday after lightning forced the second half to be postponed. When play resumed, the Rebels made sure the long wait was worth it.

Barely.

Tascosa survives another one-point thriller

Tascosa improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in district with its second 28-27 victory of the season. Just as they did in their season-opening win over Canyon, the Rebels had to stop a two-point conversion in the closing moments to preserve the victory.

This one carried considerably more weight with district play underway.

Tascosa appeared to be in control with a 28-21 lead and the ball inside the Frenship 20 with less than three minutes remaining. But the Rebels had struggled with center-quarterback exchanges throughout the second half, and another bad snap gave Frenship possession at its own 11.

Suddenly, the Tigers had life.

Frenship quarterback James Ordonez kept the drive alive with two fourth-down completions, including a 23-yard connection with Isaiah Gillian. Then, with 47 seconds remaining, Ordonez found Gillian wide open for a 45-yard touchdown.

That cut Tascosa's lead to 28-27.

Frenship coach Jay Northcutt elected to go for the win instead of kicking the extra point, setting up the biggest play of a game that had already lasted parts of three days.

Tascosa was ready.

Senior defensive back Da'Mari Moore came blitzing off the edge and forced Ordonez to release the ball earlier than he wanted. Ordonez floated a pass toward Gillian, but the Rebels swarmed him well short of the goal line.

Tascosa still wasn't completely out of danger.

Frenship attempted an onside kick and got a favorable bounce off a Tascosa player. Quarterback Brayden Lineman, however, recovered the ball for the Rebels.

After all the trouble Tascosa had experienced with snaps, the Rebels successfully handled the exchanges in victory formation and finally brought one of the strangest games in recent program history to an end.

The longest halftime around

Tascosa led 13-7 when the teams headed to the locker room Thursday night.

They didn't come back out for the second half until Saturday.

Lightning caused a delay of approximately two and a half hours Thursday before officials decided the game couldn't safely continue. That left both teams with an unusual Friday — not quite a bye week, not quite a normal game day and essentially a halftime that stretched for roughly 39 hours.

Tascosa didn't look rusty when the game resumed.

The Rebels took Saturday's opening kickoff and marched down the field, with Zaryan Malone scoring on a 1-yard run. J'Kavien Moore added the two-point conversion to stretch the lead to 21-7.

That conversion would prove enormous.

Frenship answered behind Ordonez, who scored on a 26-yard run to cut the deficit to 21-14 late in the third quarter.

Then came one of the strangest — and biggest — plays of the afternoon.

A bad Tascosa snap sent the ball into the backfield, but Lineman recovered it and kept the play alive. Instead of taking a major loss, he found David Gordon over the middle for a 43-yard touchdown only 17 seconds into the fourth quarter.

What looked like disaster turned into six points and a 28-14 Tascosa lead.

Ordonez answered a little more than two minutes later with an 11-yard touchdown run, setting up the frantic finish.

Rebels found their offense before the delay

Thursday's first half started slowly, with the defenses controlling much of the action.

Tascosa had an early opportunity to score after driving deep into Frenship territory, but a bad snap on a 29-yard field-goal attempt forced Gordon to scramble with the ball. He was stopped short of the first down.

Frenship capitalized by putting together a long touchdown drive. A 38-yard completion from Ordonez to Weston Humphries moved the Tigers across midfield, and Ordonez later connected with Noah Gonzales for a 7-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

That finally got Tascosa's offense moving.

J'Kavien Moore sparked the Rebels' ground game with 45 yards on three carries during the ensuing drive, finishing it by taking a pitch 16 yards for a touchdown with 3:24 left before halftime.

Tascosa's defense then forced a three-and-out, giving the offense another opportunity before the break.

Lineman hit Gordon for 30 yards to the Frenship 11, and Malone scored from a yard out with 24 seconds remaining to put Tascosa ahead 13-7.

Then came the lightning. And the waiting.

Tascosa's running game delivers

The Rebels once again leaned heavily on their rushing attack.

J'Kavien Moore finished with a game-high 104 yards on only nine carries, while Cameron Vallejo nearly gave Tascosa two 100-yard rushers by piling up 98 yards on nine attempts.

Frenship, meanwhile, did most of its damage through Ordonez. The Tigers quarterback completed 19 of 29 passes for 211 yards while also scoring twice on the ground.

The Rebels certainly have plenty to clean up after four consecutive botched snaps nearly turned a comfortable late lead into a crushing loss.

But district football isn't about style points.

After a game that started Thursday, resumed Saturday and came down to a single play in the final minute, Tascosa is 1-0 where it matters most.

And after the longest halftime imaginable, the Rebels can finally start thinking about their next game.
