The Randall Raiders are heading into their bye week with plenty of momentum — and a perfect record to go with it.

Randall improved to 5-0 with a convincing 36-7 victory over Waco University, giving the Raiders another confidence boost before District 2-4A Division I play begins in two weeks.

It has been an impressive start for a Randall team that continues to look more dangerous as the season moves along.

The Raiders wasted little time taking control against Waco University. Randall held a 7-0 advantage after the first quarter before stretching the lead to 21-0 by halftime. From there, the Raiders never allowed Waco University to seriously threaten their lead.

One of the biggest positives was the return of sophomore quarterback Hendrix Funk.

Funk returned after suffering an injury against Canadian and completed 6 of 15 passes for 100 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception. His biggest play of the night was also Randall's longest pass, a 53-yard touchdown connection with senior wide receiver Phoenix Sherwood.

Sherwood was everywhere for the Raiders.

The senior finished with 108 all-purpose yards and accounted for three touchdowns, scoring twice as a receiver and throwing another. He caught three passes for 95 yards, with both of his receiving scores helping Randall build its commanding advantage.

Sherwood also got an opportunity to show off his arm, connecting with Bryson Lynn on a 13-yard touchdown pass. The score was the first varsity touchdown for Lynn, the son of West Texas A&M head football coach Josh Lynn.

Randall's passing game wasn't always clean, as the Raiders finished 7 of 20 for 113 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. But when Randall needed a big play through the air, Sherwood provided it.

The Raiders also kept things moving on the ground.

Randall rushed 34 times for 121 yards, averaging 3.6 yards per carry. Danny Aureilo Nunez led the way with 51 yards on 12 attempts, while Drayden Ray added 39 yards on 12 carries. Michael Harris made the most of his opportunities with 21 yards on three attempts.

It wasn't a night built around eye-popping offensive numbers. Instead, Randall controlled the game, made enough explosive plays and kept Waco University off the scoreboard until the outcome was well in hand.

That's a formula the Raiders would gladly take into district play.

At 5-0, Randall has already put together the kind of start that gets attention. Now comes the part of the schedule that will determine just how far this team can go.

The Raiders will have next week off, giving Funk and the rest of the roster a chance to get healthy and prepare for the games that matter most.

Randall opens District 2-4A Division I competition Oct. 9 on the road against Pampa.

The Raiders couldn't ask for much more heading into the break: five games, five wins and plenty of momentum for the district race ahead.
