Amarillo City Council members will consider new traffic cameras, several zoning requests and a study of the city’s aquatic market when they meet Tuesday.
The council’s Aug. 11 meeting begins with a 1 p.m. executive session before members return for the regular meeting at 3 p.m. in the Council Chamber at Amarillo City Hall, 623 S. Johnson St.
Behind closed doors, the council is scheduled to discuss two economic development prospects. The agenda identifies Project #City-2505 as an aerospace and defense project and Project #City-2507 as commercial. No companies are identified.
Once the public meeting begins, council members will hear the Amarillo Economic Development Corporation’s quarterly update, discuss changes to city rules covering trees and vegetation that obstruct streets and sidewalks, and receive an update on the North Heights Community Air Quality Monitoring Effort.
The city’s fiscal 2024-25 Single Audit will also be presented by CliftonLarsonAllen LLP.
Much of Tuesday’s agenda involves city equipment, infrastructure and technology purchases.
One of the more notable items is a request from the Amarillo Police Department to purchase 29 Verkada traffic cameras for about $343,673. The cameras, funded through a COPS Grant, would expand coverage at intersections around Amarillo.
Separate from those cameras, Public Works is requesting $260,790 for video detection systems at 11 signalized intersections. Those cameras detect vehicles at or approaching intersections and allow traffic signals to adjust green-light times. The city says the technology can help reduce congestion and improve safety.
The council will also consider spending $178,585 for traffic signal cabinets and controllers and $173,988 for new signal poles. Two intersections — Southeast 34th Avenue and Tradewinds Street, and North Western Street and Fairway Drive — have met requirements for new traffic signals, according to the agenda.
Other big-ticket items include a $599,728 Vactor truck for the Waste Water Department and a five-year lease totaling about $1.41 million for a Caterpillar D8 dozer at the city landfill.
Council members will also consider renewing the city’s ESRI geographic information system software agreement for three years at a cost of $910,000.
Several land-use decisions are on the agenda as well.
A public hearing is scheduled on a request to rezone 9.23 acres near Sunrise Drive and Southeast 14th Avenue for an RV park. The request was submitted by Furman Land Surveyors Inc. for Big Texan Land Holding LLC and Galaxy Catering Inc.
Another case covers property near Southwest 15th Avenue and South Harrison Street, where applicants are seeking zoning for campus-style development using Central Business District standards. Those standards would allow changes including greater building heights and lot coverage and reduced setbacks and parking requirements.
The council will also consider a $146,600 contract with Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc. for an Aquatic Market Viability Study.
Residents can speak during the public comment portion of Tuesday’s meeting. Speakers are asked to register at least 15 minutes before the meeting, either through the city, by calling the City Secretary’s Office at (806) 378-3014 or in person at City Hall.
The Amarillo City Council will also hold a series of public budget workshops to discuss and review the proposed FY 2026/2027 City of Amarillo budget.
