One of the Texas Panhandle's best-known convenience store chains is preparing for a major change in ownership.

Pak-A-Sak has entered into an agreement to sell its 24 convenience store locations to Casey's General Stores, though the transaction has not yet been completed.

A Pak-A-Sak representative confirmed the deal remains in the option period, meaning it has not closed. Until then, it's business as usual. Stores remain open, employees are continuing their regular duties, and customers should not expect any immediate changes.

The family-owned company announced the agreement in a statement, calling the decision the next step after nearly five decades of serving the Panhandle.

"For three generations, Pak-A-Sak has been more than a business to our family—it has been our life's work. We have grown from a single location into a staple of the Texas Panhandle, and that success is due entirely to the dedication, hard work, and heart of our employees. Because we care deeply about the future of this company we have decided to enter into an agreement to sell Pak-A-Sak to Casey's General Stores."

The company said Casey's was selected because the two businesses share similar priorities.

"We are confident in selecting Casey's for this next chapter as they hold the same values we hold dear—community service, quality, and a family-friendly environment. We are in the early stages of this transition and at this time nothing changes in our day-to-day operations. We appreciate our team continuing to do what they do best – serving our guests and communities."

Casey's also confirmed the agreement in its own statement.

"Casey's, the third largest convenience chain, has entered into an agreement to acquire 24 Pak-A-Sak stores in northern Texas. These high-quality locations are primarily in the Amarillo area and will add to the company's growing number of units in the state. We look forward to the next steps in this transaction and welcoming the employees at these locations to the Casey's family."

Founded in 1978 by Dale and Joyce McKee in Canyon, Pak-A-Sak has grown into a familiar name across the Texas Panhandle. The company operates stores in Amarillo, Canyon, Borger, Bushland, Childress, Dumas, Hereford, Lubbock, Pampa and Perryton, with Amarillo serving as the home of its corporate office.

The chain has built its reputation on customer service. Sixteen of its 24 locations offer full-service drive-thru lanes, allowing customers to purchase nearly anything sold inside the store without leaving their vehicle.

The agreement also marks another step in Casey's expansion across Texas. The Iowa-based convenience store chain acquired more than 140 CEFCO locations in 2024 and opened its first Amarillo store along Interstate 27 earlier this year.

Casey's operates nearly 3,000 stores across 19 states and is the nation's third-largest convenience store chain. While it's known nationally for its made-from-scratch pizza and prepared foods, the company has increasingly expanded through acquisitions in Texas and other southern states.

Neither company has announced when the transaction is expected to close. Until then, Pak-A-Sak says its focus remains on serving customers and communities across the Panhandle while the sale moves through the approval process.
