Rescue Crews Save Person After 75-Foot Fall in Ceta Canyon
The Randall County Fire Department released details about the rescue of a person who reportedly fell about 75 feet into Ceta Canyon Saturday night. The Randall County and Canyon fire departments’ Joint Technical Rescue Team responded around 8 p.m. Aug. 29 and assessed the scene before beginning the rescue. Officials said crews used specialized equipment and techniques to safely remove the patient from the canyon. BSA EMS, AeroCare, the Texas Department of Public Safety, Randall County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department assisted with the response.
Armstrong County Volunteer Fire Departments Seek New Recruits
Volunteer fire departments in Armstrong County are looking for new members as their ranks continue to decline. The county’s three volunteer departments — Washburn, Claude and Wayside — have a combined 18 members. Armstrong County Fire Chief Jerry Johnson said population growth and increased construction could lead to more accidents and emergencies while departments lack the manpower needed to respond. Firefighters hope to recruit more residents, particularly younger volunteers, to bolster their ranks. The departments will recruit Saturday during the car show at the Armstrong County Square in Claude, which runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Amarillo, AISD Partner on Police Dispatch Services
The city of Amarillo has entered into an agreement to provide dispatch services for the Amarillo Independent School District Police Department as the district expands its police force. Under the agreement, the city’s dispatch system will handle 911 calls and coordinate support from the Amarillo Police Department when needed at AISD campuses. AISD police will remain the primary law enforcement authority on school grounds, while the city will serve in a supporting role. AISD will pay the city $60,000 for the dispatch services. The agreement will automatically renew for additional one-year terms unless either party cancels it. AISD hopes to transition to the new system Sept. 1.
Hereford Community Rallies Around Family After House Fire
The Hereford community has rallied around a local family after a house fire destroyed their home and belongings. Hereford ISD asked for help Aug. 27, seeking clothing, beds, appliances, household items and monetary donations for the family. By Friday, the district reported that community members had responded with clothing, furniture, money and other necessities. After football practice Aug. 28, Hereford football players helped load the donated items and deliver them to the family. The district said the response gave the football program’s “Herd One” motto a broader meaning as the community came together to support a family in need.
Amarillo College Seeks Public Input on Master Plan
Amarillo College is asking community members to share their ideas as the college develops its master plan. AC will host a Master Plan Open House from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the second-floor lobby of the College Union Building on the Washington Street Campus. Community members who cannot attend the open house can provide feedback through an online survey.
