Roller Coaster Riders Rescued at Wonderland
Eighteen people were safely rescued Saturday night after the Texas Tornado roller coaster at Wonderland Amusement Park became stuck because of a mechanical malfunction. Amarillo firefighters responded around 11 p.m. and used an aerial ladder to remove riders one at a time. No injuries were reported, although one person was evaluated at the scene by Amarillo Medical Services. Fire officials said the ride stopped because of a mechanical malfunction.
Teen Arrested in Discovery Center Shooting
A 17-year-old Amarillo girl has been arrested in connection with a Feb. 28 shooting in the parking lot of the Don Harrington Discovery Center. Anisten Gracie Bond is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Investigators said surveillance video showed a man get out of a gray Dodge Caliber, shoot the victim and return to the vehicle before it drove away. Bond allegedly told investigators she was the only person who drove the car, which was also captured by Flock cameras leaving the area. Court records show she was ordered to have no contact with the victim, and prosecutors recommended she be held without bond.
Amarillo College Awarded $500,000 Welding Grant
Amarillo College will use a $500,000 state grant to expand its welding training programs and create new workforce credentials. The two-year award from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board will fund curriculum updates, faculty development and new continuing education welding certifications. College officials said the expanded training is intended to help students enter high-demand careers while meeting the needs of regional employers.
Blood Drive to Benefit Local Students
Coffee Memorial Blood Center is combining its back-to-school campaign with an effort to boost the area's blood supply. Through Aug. 15, donors who use the promo code SCHOOL26 will trigger a $20 donation through the Donable Cares program to nonprofits that provide school supplies for students and families. The center is also offering promotional gifts through Aug. 22 and continues to urge residents—especially those with O-negative blood—to donate as supplies remain low. Officials said stronger donations now will help meet hospital demand and avoid shortages.
