Firefighters rescued 18 people Saturday night after the Texas Tornado roller coaster stalled at Wonderland Amusement Park during the park's 75th anniversary celebration.

The Amarillo Fire Department responded around 10 p.m. after receiving reports that the ride had stopped with passengers still on board. Engine 4 arrived first and determined a technical rescue team was needed. Engine 13, Ladder 13 and Engine 3 were then dispatched to assist.

Using Ladder 13's aerial apparatus, firefighters reached the stranded riders and helped each person safely off the coaster.

One person was evaluated at the scene by Amarillo Medical Services, though it was not immediately clear whether that individual was taken to a hospital. Fire officials said no injuries were reported.

The incident happened during Wonderland's milestone 75th season and comes under the park's new ownership. Jimmy Holmes, CEO of 360 Parks of America, purchased the amusement park from longtime owners Paul and Paula Borchardt last winter.

Wonderland said the Texas Tornado will remain closed while the cause of the incident is investigated.

"Saturday night, the Texas Tornado roller coaster stopped while riders were on board. The Amarillo Fire Department responded and assisted with safely evacuating guests from the ride. No injuries were reported.

"The Texas Tornado will remain closed while we conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause and complete any necessary repairs. The safety of our guests and team members is always our highest priority.

"We sincerely appreciate the Amarillo Fire Department for its prompt assistance and thank our guests for their patience and cooperation."

The Texas Tornado is one of Wonderland's best-known attractions, featuring more than 2,000 feet of steel track.

The Amarillo Fire Department said additional information about the incident is expected to be released Monday.
