Canyon’s Municipal Court was closed until further notice Monday, leaving trials and court dockets canceled and residents with little information about what prompted the shutdown.
The court was closed without explaination. It remains unclear how long the closure will last or when normal court operations could resume.
Canyon officials have not responded to requests for comment regarding the closure.
That lack of an explanation leaves unanswered questions about what is happening at the court and what the shutdown means for residents with pending cases, scheduled appearances or other court business.
The Canyon Municipal Court serves as the first level of the judicial branch for cases within the city. Its jurisdiction includes Class C misdemeanors committed within Canyon city limits, as well as enforcement of city ordinances.
The court also handles fines and court fees associated with citations issued by the Canyon Police Department, Animal Control Division, Fire Marshal, Environmental Health and Code Enforcement.
Beyond trials, pretrial hearings and initial appearances, the court handles a range of administrative matters that can directly affect people with pending citations. Those include deferrals, driver safety programs, payment plans, extensions and warrants.
Municipal courts and Justice of the Peace courts have concurrent jurisdiction over Class C violations of the Texas Penal Code, while municipal courts have exclusive original jurisdiction over violations of city ordinances. Fines for traffic offenses and other Class C misdemeanors can range from $1 to $500.
Canyon’s Municipal Court is also a court of record, meaning appeals are based on specific alleged errors contained in the court record following a trial before a judge or jury.
For now, residents who have business before the court will have to wait for more information about when proceedings will resume.
The City of Canyon is asking anyone with a pending court matter to contact the Municipal Court by email at court@canyontx.gov.
