The Caprock Longhorns didn’t get the luxury of opening the season at home, but that didn’t seem to bother them Friday night.

Caprock went into Pampa and came away with a convincing 29-12 victory over the Harvesters, giving the Longhorns a 1-0 start and some early momentum heading into a big matchup next week.

One of the biggest playmakers for Caprock was Adrian Apodaca. He finished the night with 96 receiving yards and a touchdown, providing a spark for a Longhorn offense that put 29 points on the board away from home.

For Caprock fans, it was about as good of a start as they could have hoped for. Opening night can bring plenty of mistakes and growing pains, especially on the road, but the Longhorns found a way to take control and leave Pampa with a comfortable win.

The loss was another tough one for the Harvesters. Pampa falls to 0-1 and has now lost seven consecutive games dating back to last season. The Harvesters have also dropped three straight at home.

Caprock, meanwhile, gets to enjoy the 1-0 start for a few days before turning its attention to a familiar Amarillo opponent.

The Longhorns will face Palo Duro at 7 p.m. Thursday in a matchup that should provide a much bigger early-season test.

Caprock now has a road victory under its belt and an opportunity to make an even bigger statement against Palo Duro. If Apodaca and the Longhorn offense can build on what they showed in Pampa, Thursday night could get interesting in a hurry.

Pampa will try to bounce back Friday when it takes on Dalhart at 7 p.m. The Harvesters enter that matchup ranked No. 863 by MaxPreps, while Dalhart sits at No. 365.

For now, though, the opening weekend belongs to Caprock.

The Longhorns went on the road, put 29 points on the board and came home 1-0. That’s a pretty good way to start a football season.
