The Amarillo City Council approved a new contract Tuesday for the demolition of the old English Field terminal building near Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport after the previously selected contractor was unable to secure proper bonding for the project.
The council originally awarded a contract in March for demolition and abatement work at the former terminal. According to the agenda for Tuesday’s regular council meeting, the contractor had since been unable to obtain the bonding required to move forward with the project, prompting the city to seek a new contract.
The new contract covers asbestos abatement and demolition of the building to ground level.
The Texas Historical Commission has determined that the old terminal building has no historical value, clearing the way for its removal.
Demolishing the building could also open the property to new use. According to information provided to the council, there is potential interest from a tenant in the area of the airport where the terminal currently stands.
GA Environmental will provide environmental consulting services and monitor the asbestos abatement portion of the project. The company already has an environmental consulting agreement with the City of Amarillo.
