The United States launched another round of airstrikes against Iran on Saturday night, less than 24 hours after two American service members were killed in an attack on U.S. military bases in Jordan.
According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes began around 6 p.m. EDT and targeted Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces that U.S. officials say were behind Friday's missile and drone attack.
The attack in Jordan left two U.S. service members dead, while another remains missing. CENTCOM said the latest deaths bring the total number of U.S. military personnel killed since the conflict began to 16.
Four other service members were evacuated to hospitals in Jordan after the attack but have since been released. Troops who suffered minor injuries have already returned to duty.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth paid tribute to the fallen service members Saturday.
"Godspeed, heroes. Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve," Hegseth said.
Saturday's operation marked the eighth straight day of U.S. military strikes in the CENTCOM region as Washington continues to ramp up pressure on Tehran.
In recent days, American forces have expanded their list of targets, striking energy infrastructure, port facilities, bridges and other sites across Iran as President Donald Trump seeks to increase pressure on the Iranian regime.
Iran has continued to answer with attacks of its own, launching strikes against U.S. allies in the region, including American military bases, along with power and desalination plants. The back-and-forth attacks have raised fears that the fighting could grow into a much larger regional conflict.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei blamed the United States for breaking the fragile ceasefire and warned that more retaliation could be coming.
"Now that the American enemy is seeking to escalate the conflict thereby incurring even heavier costs and further humiliation, it should know that the noble nation of Iran and the Resistance Front have unforgettable lessons in store for it," Khamenei said on social media.
