A 23-year-old El Paso man is facing multiple felony charges following an early Sunday morning crash in Canyon that left four people critically injured, including a pregnant woman whose injuries resulted in the loss of her unborn child.
According to the Canyon Police Department, the single-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 3:15 a.m. on July 5 at the intersection of southbound U.S. Highway 87 and the eastbound U.S. Highway 60 exit ramp.
Investigators say Jacob Saucedo was driving a white 2023 Nissan SUV when the vehicle struck a concrete median. Three passengers were traveling with him at the time of the crash, including a 21-year-old pregnant woman and a 9-month-old child.
Emergency responders transported all four occupants to a local hospital, where they were listed in critical condition. Authorities said the pregnant passenger sustained injuries severe enough to result in the loss of her unborn child.
Following the preliminary investigation, Canyon police charged Saucedo with three counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle. The charges stem from injuries suffered by the vehicle's occupants. Police have not announced any additional charges related to the death of the unborn child, and officials have not indicated whether further charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
Authorities have not released details about what investigators believe led up to the crash beyond stating that the SUV struck the concrete median. Information regarding Saucedo's alleged blood alcohol concentration, speed, or other contributing factors has not been made public.
The identities of the passengers have not been released.
The crash remains under investigation by the Canyon Police Department. Officials said no additional information is available at this time as investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The incident marks another serious impaired-driving case in the Texas Panhandle and serves as a reminder of the potentially devastating consequences of driving while intoxicated. Investigators will continue gathering evidence before determining whether any additional charges or legal actions are warranted.
