Zoo Parade Draws Record Crowd
The Amarillo Zoo & Sanctuary welcomed more than 1,400 visitors for its inaugural Zoo Parade on July 4, far exceeding expectations after just two weeks of promotion. Executive Director Stephanie Brady said next year's event will feature faster entry for online ticket holders, expanded parade routes and additional floats. The celebration highlighted the zoo's transformation into a nonprofit animal sanctuary following a partnership between the Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and the City of Amarillo. Months of renovations revitalized the aging facility, and Brady said the enthusiastic community response reflects strong support for the zoo's new mission.
Three Arrested in Amarillo Homicide Investigation
The Amarillo Police Department has arrested three people in connection with the May homicide of 61-year-old George Eggleston. Police said Eggleston was found dead from a gunshot wound on May 11 at the Fifth Season Inn on West Interstate 40. Tabitha Thrasher, 49, was arrested in Amarillo, while Christian Eaglin, 30, and Clyde Casey, 41, were apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Dallas and Houston, respectively. The investigation remains ongoing.
Two Killed in South Amarillo Crash
Two people died early Sunday after a vehicle crashed into a utility pole on South Grand Street, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Authorities said 34-year-old Martha Patricia Picazo of Amarillo was driving a 2018 Audi Q3 when it left the roadway around 1:50 a.m. Her passenger, 31-year-old Luiz Daniel Lopez of Wildorado, also died at the scene. Investigators said seat belt use is unknown because of the severity of the crash, which remains under investigation.
Firefighters Respond to Two Fourth of July Fires
The Amarillo Fire Department released new details about two fires that occurred on the Fourth of July. Firefighters contained a fully involved structure fire near East Amarillo Boulevard and North Bivins Street, preventing the flames from spreading to nearby buildings despite windy conditions, and no injuries were reported. A second fire behind a vacant home in the 1700 block of North Washington Street was determined to have been caused by fireworks and was limited to debris and part of a porch. No injuries were reported in either incident, and damage estimates for the structure fire have not yet been released.
