TxDOT to begin contruction on main lanes of Loop 335 from FM 2186 to north of Arden Road

Approval has been granted for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Amarillo District to advance a major project on SL 335, marking a significant step forward for infrastructure improvements in the region. The project will extend from north of FM 2186 to north of Arden Road and represents a $47 million investment aimed at addressing growing traffic demands and improving long-term roadway safety.

The scope of the project includes the construction of new main lanes designed to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion along this busy corridor. A key feature will be a new overpass at Arden Road, which will help eliminate at-grade conflicts and improve travel efficiency for both through traffic and local commuters. In addition, new traffic signal installations at Arden Road will further enhance intersection safety and help manage vehicle movements more effectively.

To support visibility and nighttime driving conditions, high-mast lighting will be installed throughout key sections of the corridor. The project also incorporates shared-use paths, providing safer and more accessible options for pedestrians and cyclists. These additions reflect a broader focus on multimodal transportation and community connectivity, ensuring the corridor serves a wider range of users beyond vehicle traffic alone.

Originally planned for a 2030 construction start, the project timeline has been accelerated to 2026 due to proactive planning efforts and the availability of funding. This advancement highlights the region’s prioritization of safety improvements and infrastructure readiness in response to continued growth in the Amarillo area and surrounding communities.

The project is currently scheduled to be bid in August 2026, with construction expected to begin in early winter following contractor selection. Once underway, the work will be completed in phases to maintain traffic flow as much as possible while construction activities progress along the corridor.

Throughout the duration of the project, officials will continue to provide updates as milestones are reached and construction phases begin. Motorists traveling through the area are encouraged to remain alert, follow posted signage, and reduce speeds in active work zones to ensure the safety of both workers and drivers.

As with all major infrastructure projects, schedules and activities remain subject to change due to weather conditions, emergency maintenance needs, or other unforeseen circumstances. The improvements planned for SL 335 are expected to deliver long-term benefits in safety, efficiency, and regional mobility once completed.
