A 60-year-old Canyon resident died and four pets were killed in a late-night house fire that occurred this week, according to local authorities.

Emergency crews from the Canyon Fire Department and Canyon Police Department responded to a residential fire at approximately 11 p.m. at a home in the 1200 block of Ninth Avenue. When firefighters arrived, they encountered heavy flames engulfing the residence.

Firefighters entered the burning home while working to extinguish the blaze and located one occupant inside. The victim, later identified as Theunis DeBruin, was removed from the residence, and emergency personnel immediately began life-saving efforts. Despite those efforts, DeBruin was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials reported that no other people were inside the home at the time of the fire. Four pets also died in the incident.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The Canyon Fire Department and Canyon Police Department continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the blaze.

Authorities have not released additional details as the investigation remains ongoing.
