Amarillo Zoo Launches First-Ever Summer Camps

The Amarillo Zoo and Sanctuary is hosting its first-ever Zoo Crew summer camps, with sessions continuing through August. Two-day camps are offered on Wednesdays and Thursdays for children ages 6-9 and 10-14. Zoo officials scheduled the camps to complement the Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center's Monday and Tuesday camps, allowing children to attend both. Each program features different topics and hands-on learning experiences.

Fourth of July Animal Parade Set at Amarillo Zoo

The Amarillo Zoo and Sanctuary is preparing for its annual Fourth of July Animal Parade beginning at 11:30 a.m. on July 4. The event is included with regular zoo admission, and a food truck will be available on-site. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to watch animal ambassadors and special guests along the parade route. The first 100 visitors will receive a gift.

Woman Killed in Randall County Pedestrian Crash

A 26-year-old Amarillo woman died Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle on FM 1541, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Investigators said Kayla Frizzell was walking in the northbound lane when the driver was unable to see her until it was too late. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and no other injuries were reported. The crash remains under investigation.

Suspect Arrested After Chase, SWAT Standoff

The Randall County Sheriff's Office arrested Bobby Phommasene Monday following a vehicle pursuit and SWAT standoff. Deputies initially responded to a report of a possible intoxicated driver before Phommasene allegedly fled, leading officers on a high-speed chase. After refusing commands to exit his vehicle, SWAT and negotiators were called before he surrendered peacefully. He was booked on charges including driving while intoxicated, evading arrest or detention, and making a terroristic threat against a peace officer.
