Amarillo College Regents to Meet Tuesday

The Amarillo College Board of Regents will meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Gilvin Broadcast Center, 2408 S. Jackson St.

The meeting agenda includes public comments, reports from the Board of Regents, committee updates, the college president's report and comments regarding AC Affiliates.

Regents are expected to consider several action items, including approval of a master planning services agreement with Broaddus Planning, a use agreement with RockRose Sports Park, the purchase of dental hygiene student kits and the purchase of a new television transmitter and filters for KACV-TV. The board will also consider incentive pay for the college president.

City Seeks Public Input on Community Development Funding

The City of Amarillo is accepting public comments from June 29 through July 28 on its proposed 2026-2027 Annual Action Plan for Community Development Block Grant and HOME Investment Partnership Program funding.

The proposed funding allocations and budget recommendations were approved by the Community Development Advisory Committee during a public hearing on June 11. After the public comment period closes, all comments and final funding recommendations will be presented to the Amarillo City Council for consideration before the completed action plan is submitted to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development by Aug. 15.

Residents can review the proposed recommendations and submit comments through the City of Amarillo's website in both English and Spanish.

Bond Denied for Man Charged in April Shooting

A Potter County judge has denied bond for a man accused of a shooting that occurred near Northeast 24th Avenue and Dumas Drive in April.

Court records show Clifton Jermaine Holman faces three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the April 5 incident. Officers responding to reports of gunfire found multiple shell casings, while victims reported their vehicle had been struck several times, leaving a shattered rear window and other damage.

Investigators identified Holman through surveillance video. He was arrested June 19 after officers searching a home on Sequoia Street found him hiding beneath a pile of clothing in the basement. Holman remains in the Potter County Jail.

City Announces July Fourth Holiday Closures

The City of Amarillo has announced holiday closures and service changes in observance of Independence Day.

City Hall and Amarillo Municipal Court will be closed Friday, July 3. Amarillo Public Libraries, Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare, and city brush sites will be closed Friday and Saturday. The city landfill will be open Friday but closed Saturday.

Amarillo City Transit buses will operate normal hours Friday but will not run Saturday. Residential trash collection normally scheduled for Thursday will be picked up Wednesday, while Friday collections will move to Thursday. Commercial trash collection will remain on its regular schedule. Ross Rogers and Comanche Trail golf complexes will maintain normal operating hours.

Spearman Man Drowns at Lake Fryer

A Spearman man drowned Friday evening while kayaking at Lake Fryer in Ochiltree County, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Officials said 30-year-old Sergio Guzman fell into the water around 7:30 p.m. after witnesses saw him kayaking. He did not resurface, prompting a search using sonar equipment. The Amarillo Police Department Dive Team recovered his body Saturday morning at approximately 5:30 a.m.

Authorities reported Guzman was not wearing a life jacket. Texas Parks and Wildlife officials continue to remind boaters and paddlers to wear properly fitted life jackets and to let someone know their destination and expected return time before heading out on the water.
