High Plains Headlines for 6-4-2026

Amarillo residents can look forward to a busy June with community celebrations, infrastructure improvements, veteran services and ongoing public safety investigations. Here is a roundup of recent developments from across the city.

Annual Cattle Drive Returns to Downtown Amarillo

The annual Amarillo Coors Cowboy Club Cattle Drive will take place June 6 at 10 a.m. in downtown Amarillo. The parade will feature 60 Texas Longhorns, horseback riders, motorized groups and staged Old West shootouts as it makes its way through downtown streets. The event honors Amarillo’s heritage as a major cattle shipping market in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The procession begins on Polk Street and concludes at the Tri-State Fairgrounds beneath the lighted arch. Following the parade, the longhorns will remain on display during the Coors Cowboy Club Ranch Rodeo at the Amarillo National Center.

City Approves $7.5 Million Street Maintenance Program

The City of Amarillo has approved a nearly $7.5 million contract for its 2025–26 street maintenance program, funded through 2026 street bond funds. Planned improvements include gravel treatment on more than six miles of arterial streets and microsurfacing on more than 800,000 square yards of residential roadways. The project will also include a cape seal treatment—a combination of chip seal and microsurfacing—across 69 blocks of arterial streets. City officials say the treatment is expected to extend pavement life by eight to 12 years. Work is scheduled in the Belmar, Puckett West, Puckett Place, Vineyards and Creighton Park neighborhoods, with only minor traffic disruptions anticipated.

Authorities have not released information regarding the victim’s condition, and the investigation remains active.
