U.S. Navy destroys Iranian boats after missile and drone attack in Persian Gulf

Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply Monday after Iran opened fire on U.S. warships, prompting a swift military response from American forces in the region.

According to U.S. Central Command, U.S. naval forces destroyed six Iranian small boats following the initial confrontation. The exchange comes amid heightened efforts by the Trump administration to secure safe passage for commercial shipping through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, which has faced significant disruptions in recent weeks.

U.S. forces also intercepted multiple Iranian cruise missiles and drones during the incident, preventing further damage and maintaining operational control in the area. Military officials said the actions were part of a broader initiative aimed at stabilizing maritime traffic and deterring additional aggression.

The Pentagon continues to move forward with its maritime security effort, known as Project Freedom, which includes a naval blockade restricting vessels departing from Iranian ports. U.S. Navy destroyers remain stationed throughout the Persian Gulf, where officials say an effective pathway has been cleared through Iranian mines to allow commercial ships to transit more safely.

Military leaders reported that dozens of international vessels have been contacted in recent hours to encourage renewed movement through the Strait of Hormuz. Ships from dozens of countries remain in the region, underscoring the global economic stakes tied to the waterway.

Despite the tensions, two cargo ships successfully navigated the strait on Monday under the protection of U.S. guided-missile destroyers.

The latest developments also impacted U.S. allies. The United Arab Emirates reported missile and drone activity over its airspace, with defense systems intercepting several incoming threats.

The confrontation signals a fragile moment in U.S.-Iran relations, raising concerns about the stability of a ceasefire reached just weeks ago.
