The project focuses on improving accessibility and safety for pedestrians and drivers through upgraded infrastructure and enhanced roadway design.
The project focuses on improving accessibility and safety for pedestrians and drivers through upgraded infrastructure and enhanced roadway design.
According to project planning details, the work will be carried out in two phases and includes Americans with Disabilities Act compliant upgrades. Phase one will take place along 8th Street between 4th Avenue and 9th Avenue, as well as along 9th Avenue between 8th Street and 10th Street. This segment will introduce new sidewalks and shared-use paths designed to support safer walking and biking routes, especially in areas with higher foot traffic.
Officials indicate that phase one is intended to improve overall mobility and reduce safety risks for pedestrians in the corridor. Completion is targeted for early August, allowing the improvements to be in place before the start of the Canyon Independent School District academic year.
Phase two will extend improvements to the area just north of Spur TX 48, also known as Russell Long Boulevard, continuing toward the US 60/87 split. This portion of the project will include the construction of a continuous shared-use path, installation of a retaining wall, updated signage, and roadway resurfacing. These enhancements are intended to create a more cohesive transportation corridor while addressing long term safety and mobility needs.
The overall project carries an estimated cost of $3.2 million and is scheduled for completion by spring 2027. During construction, drivers should expect periodic lane closures and changing traffic patterns. Transportation officials emphasize the importance of reducing speed and exercising caution in active work zones to protect both workers and the traveling public.
Officials also note that construction timelines may shift due to weather conditions, emergency maintenance, or unforeseen events that could impact progress.
Residents and commuters are encouraged to plan extra travel time and follow posted detours throughout both phases of construction. Local agencies will continue coordinating with contractors to minimize disruptions and maintain access to nearby neighborhoods and businesses. Updates on project progress and traffic impacts will be shared through official transportation channels as work advances.
