A deadly overnight shooting at an Amarillo apartment complex has left two teenagers dead and 10 others injured, according to the Amarillo Police Department, marking another violent incident in a city already grappling with a recent surge in crime.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 1:58 a.m. on May 2 at the Westminster Apartments, located at 2415 South Coulter. Authorities say the violence stemmed from a gathering involving “juveniles and young adults” that had initially taken place at a different location before moving to the apartment complex.
Preliminary findings indicate that several individuals were asked to leave the original gathering. Investigators believe those individuals later followed attendees to the Coulter address, attempted to enter an apartment, and opened fire using what police described as a “rifle-style” weapon.
Two victims — 17-year-old Ezekiel Rudy Almazan and a 16-year-old boy — were pronounced dead at the scene. Ten other individuals sustained gunshot wounds, though officials have not released details about their conditions.
Police say the incident appears to have been a targeted attack, but the motive remains unclear. Authorities also said the suspects were believed to have some affiliation with the location and were known to at least one person at the gathering. Investigators are currently searching for the suspects, whose ages have not been released. No arrests have been made.
During the investigation, officers recovered a Glock 9mm handgun on a landing outside Apartment 244. However, police noted that no weapons have been recovered directly from any suspects. Evidence collected at the scene, including cartridge casings found in an alley south of the complex, suggests that multiple weapons were used in the shooting.
The Amarillo Police Department is asking residents in the Belmar neighborhood to assist with the investigation by reviewing doorbell camera footage or residential surveillance systems for any unusual activity during the early morning hours. Community members with relevant video are encouraged to submit it to authorities.
The shooting comes less than six weeks after a series of violent incidents on March 22 that left six people dead and 10 others injured, raising ongoing concerns about public safety in Amarillo.
In a statement, Amarillo Police Chief Thomas Hover highlighted the department’s intensified response to violent crime, noting that the city recorded 16 homicides in 2025 and has already reached 10 in 2026, including the two deaths from this incident.
Hover said the department has increased patrol staffing since the March incidents and is working alongside regional partners, including the Randall County Sheriff’s Department, Potter County Sheriff’s Department, and the Texas Department of Public Safety. He also outlined a broader strategy focused on proactive policing, traffic safety enforcement, and the deployment of a newly formed Gang Unit beginning this month.
“This criminal behavior is unacceptable, and the Amarillo Police Department and our regional law enforcement partners are committed to the safety of our community,” Hover said. “We will continue to relentlessly pursue these violent offenders and proactively address violent crime within the City of Amarillo.”
The investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities say additional information will be released as it becomes available.
