A hazardous materials investigation is underway in the rural New Mexico town of Mountainair after an unidentified substance at a residence left three people dead and more than a dozen first responders requiring medical treatment. Authorities say a total of 25 individuals were exposed during the incident.
According to the Torrance County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded Wednesday morning to a home in Mountainair where they discovered four people unresponsive inside. Three of the individuals were pronounced dead, while a fourth was transported to an Albuquerque hospital for emergency care.
Shortly after first responders entered the residence, multiple personnel began showing symptoms consistent with chemical exposure, including nausea and dizziness. Emergency teams initiated decontamination procedures on site and transported affected responders to area hospitals for evaluation and treatment.
The New Mexico State Police confirmed that among the 25 people exposed were the four residents inside the home, 18 first responders who have since been discharged, one responder in the process of release, and three who remain hospitalized for continued care. Officials said those still under medical supervision are in stable condition.
Hazmat specialists from Albuquerque Fire Rescue have been deployed to determine the nature of the unknown substance. Early assessments suggest exposure likely occurred through direct contact rather than airborne transmission, though laboratory analysis is ongoing. Authorities have emphasized that there is currently no indication of danger to the wider public.
Local officials described a coordinated emergency response involving law enforcement, fire personnel, and medical teams working to contain the scene and protect responders. Mountainair EMS Chief Josh Lewis was among those who remained under observation overnight as a precaution.
Community leaders have acknowledged the emotional impact of the incident. Mayor Peter Nieto announced that municipal staff were given time off following the event and said the town will continue to receive updates as investigators learn more.
Residents in the area expressed shock at the unfolding situation, with nearby community member Xavier Romero describing the event as deeply unsettling for the small town.
