Secret Service fatally shoots gunman near White House

A shooting near the White House on Saturday evening ended with a suspect dead after an exchange of gunfire with members of the United States Secret Service, according to federal officials. The incident unfolded just steps from one of the nation’s most heavily guarded locations, triggering a rapid security response and a temporary lockdown for members of the press covering President Donald Trump.

Authorities said the confrontation occurred shortly before 6 p.m. near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Investigators reported that a man approached the area carrying a bag, removed a firearm, and began shooting. Secret Service personnel stationed nearby responded immediately, returning fire and striking the suspect.

The man was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Officials also confirmed that a bystander was struck during the gunfire exchange. Information about the bystander’s condition had not been released as of Saturday night. No Secret Service officers were injured during the confrontation.

At the time of the shooting, Trump was inside the White House working with aides. Officials said the president was not harmed and was never in immediate danger during the incident. Earlier in the day, Trump had canceled a planned weekend trip to his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, as discussions involving Iran reportedly continued in Washington.

The shooting caused immediate disruption for journalists stationed at the White House. Reporters and camera crews were quickly escorted into a secure briefing room after gunfire erupted outside the complex. According to media accounts, the lockdown lasted for roughly 40 minutes while law enforcement secured the scene and assessed potential threats.

Witnesses near the White House described a chaotic response as agents rushed people away from the area. News crews abandoned equipment and moved indoors as Secret Service officers secured the perimeter and coordinated with other law enforcement agencies.

Homeland security officials later praised the swift actions of Secret Service agents, emphasizing that the response helped prevent further danger near the executive mansion. Investigators continued processing the scene Saturday night while authorities worked to determine the suspect’s identity and motive.

The incident comes amid heightened security concerns surrounding Trump following recent threats and an alleged assassination attempt connected to last month’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Saturday’s shooting is expected to renew discussions about security measures around the White House and public access near the presidential complex.
