Preview of 5-12-2026 Amarillo City Council meeting

The Amarillo City Council will meet Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the council chambers on the 3rd Floor of City Hall at 623 S. Johnson, with a full agenda ranging from infrastructure investments and public safety technology to ceremonial recognitions and funding decisions tied to major regional events.

The meeting opens with ceremonial items, including invocation, pledges, and proclamations recognizing May as Older Americans Month, National Public Works Week, Friends of the Library Day, and “Healing Begins at the Bridge.” A public comment period will follow, giving residents the opportunity to address council members on agenda items or broader city concerns.

One of the most closely watched items is a proposed ordinance to vacate approximately 8,451 square feet of public alleyway near Southwest 26th Avenue and Britain Drive. The request comes from Southwestern Public Service Company and would transfer control of the right-of-way as part of ongoing utility and land management adjustments in the area.

Council members will also consider resolutions supporting major regional events, including state-funded distributions for the 2026 Working Ranch Cowboys Association’s World Championship Ranch Rodeo through the Working Ranch Cowboys Association and the 2026 American Quarter Horse Association Versatility Ranch Horse World Championships. Both events are expected to draw national attention and significant tourism revenue to the Amarillo area.

Public safety and infrastructure upgrades make up a significant portion of the consent agenda. The Police Department is requesting approval to purchase 18 traffic cameras from Verkada through Control Technologies Inc, a system designed to enhance traffic monitoring and investigative capabilities across key intersections.

At the Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport, council will review multiple capital improvement projects, including replacement of an air handler unit, revisions to roadway and sidewalk designs, and a change order adding limestone cobble and sidewalks to employee parking areas. These updates aim to improve efficiency, safety, and long-term maintenance costs.

Additional infrastructure items include a concrete removal and repair contract awarded to Wiley Hicks Jr Inc, the purchase of a Freightliner fuel transport truck from Premier Truck Group, fire hydrant replacements through J.S. Ratliff, and pump station equipment purchases involving Zone Industries. These projects reflect ongoing maintenance needs across Amarillo’s water and transportation systems.

Council will also consider acceptance of a United Way Community Impact Grant from United Way of Amarillo and Canyon, supporting programs focused on reintegration and mental health services.

Discussion items include updates from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality regarding the Hollywood Road Wastewater Treatment Facility, traffic signal improvements, and proposed changes to parking regulations in the Route 66 historic district.

Later agenda items include applications for federal funding under the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program and the Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention (MVCPA) initiative targeting catalytic converter theft prevention. Council will also consider amendments to a Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone agreement involving RaceTrac, Attebury Elevators LLC, Rockrose Development LLC, and Happy Again LP.

With a wide-ranging agenda touching utilities, public safety, transportation, and economic development, Tuesday’s meeting is expected to draw attention from both city stakeholders and residents following Amarillo’s ongoing growth and infrastructure planning efforts.
