NHRA Roars Back Into Amarillo With Wild West Classic

After more than two decades away, the National Hot Rod Association is making its long-awaited return to Amarillo Dragway this weekend for the Wild West Classic South Central National Open on May 29-30.

The event marks a major milestone for Amarillo’s racing scene as the track continues building momentum after earning its NHRA track distinction last year. The hope is that successful turnouts and strong community support could eventually help the Dragway secure even larger divisional events in the future.

Fans can expect plenty of action on the strip with competitors battling across multiple classes, including Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, and Jr. Dragster categories. Organizers anticipate at least 200 racers and vehicles arriving from across Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, and northern Mexico.

The weekend promises more than just racing. The event is expected to bring together car enthusiasts from across the region for a celebration of speed, horsepower, and automotive culture. For many local fans, it will also be a rare opportunity to experience NHRA competition in Amarillo once again.

All races will take place at Amarillo Dragway, located at 12955 Burlington Road. Gates open Friday at 8 a.m., with time trials and qualifying beginning at noon. Saturday’s final rounds of time trials and qualifying start at 9 a.m., followed by eliminations later in the day.

Winners in each class will earn prize money, while spectators can catch all the action for $20 per day. Children under 10 will be admitted free.

For Amarillo racing fans, the Wild West Classic represents both a return to tradition and a glimpse at what the future of drag racing in the Panhandle could become.
