Communities across the Panhandle are preparing for a busy stretch of spring and summer activities, while local agencies continue rolling out new safety initiatives and public programs. From upcoming fundraisers and celebrations to public safety updates and city recreation news, here is a look at several recent developments from around the region.

Randall County traffic stop leads to drug and weapons arrest

A May 1 traffic stop in Randall County resulted in the arrest of a driver on multiple drug and weapons charges, according to the Randall County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said a K-9 unit alerted to narcotics, leading to a search of the vehicle where authorities reportedly found a stolen pistol, THC vape pens and marijuana. Avery Guerra was booked into the Randall County Jail and faces charges including drug delivery, theft of a firearm and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Shamrock announces Route 66 Centennial Celebration events

The city of Shamrock has released plans for its upcoming Route 66 Centennial Celebration scheduled for June 26-27. Activities will include a car show, rodeo, Saturday night dance, baking competition, burnout competition and crafts show. Organizers said events will be hosted at multiple locations throughout the city and are expected to draw large crowds of visitors.

Tickets available for Cheers at Wildcat Bluff fundraiser

Tickets are now on sale for Cheers at Wildcat Bluff, a family-friendly fundraiser set for May 9. The event will feature food, live music from Bomb City Bluegrass and interactive activities for attendees. VIP ticketholders ages 21 and older will also receive two complimentary beverages.

Ceta Canyon to host ribbon-cutting ceremony

Ceta Canyon Camp and Retreat Center will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony next Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. celebrating the completion of new safety initiatives and protocols. The event will also recognize donors who helped support the improvements. RSVPs are requested by today through email or by calling the camp office.

AFD launches senior home safety education program

The Amarillo Fire Department announced a new six-week educational program designed to help older adults remain safe and independent in their homes. Beginning May 12, classes will be held Tuesdays from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Warford Community Center. Topics will include fire prevention, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, reducing trip hazards, safe chemical storage and avoiding common scams targeting seniors.

Thompson Park Pool to reopen May 23

Thompson Park Pool is scheduled to reopen to the public on May 23 and will serve as Amarillo’s only outdoor pool operating this summer. City officials previously approved the closure of the Southeast and Southwest pool locations because of aging infrastructure and deteriorating facilities. In addition to the pool reopening, all 15 Amarillo splash pads are expected to open this Saturday.
