Hereford police arrest man after vehicle and foot chase

Hereford law enforcement arrested a 32-year-old man Monday morning following a vehicle pursuit that caused property damage and ended with a foot chase and multiple criminal charges.

According to authorities, officers with the Hereford Police Department attempted to initiate a traffic stop around 11 a.m. on May 4 in the 400 block of Barrett Street. The driver of a tan GMC pickup was reportedly stopped for failing to signal a turn and having expired vehicle registration.

The driver, later identified as 32-year-old Luis Alvarez, did not comply and instead fled the scene, prompting a vehicle pursuit. Officers from the Deaf Smith County Sheriff's Office and the Deaf Smith County Constable's Office assisted in the chase.

During the pursuit, authorities say Alvarez drove through the John Pitman Municipal Golf Course, damaging fencing and parts of the playable course. The chase continued until, according to officials, Alvarez threw a firearm from the vehicle. The weapon was later recovered by law enforcement.

Before the pursuit came to a complete stop, Alvarez exited the moving vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Officers pursued and apprehended him after a short chase.

Alvarez now faces multiple charges, including evading arrest in a motor vehicle, unlawful carrying of a weapon, tampering with physical evidence and criminal mischief.

Following his arrest, Alvarez was transported by ambulance to Hereford Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident.

Authorities say the case remains under investigation.
