Dr. Susan Ballabina to lead Texas A&M as 28th president starting May 11

The Board of Regents of The Texas A&M University System has unanimously appointed Dr. Susan Ballabina as the 28th president of Texas A&M University, marking a significant leadership transition for one of the state’s flagship institutions. Dr. Ballabina will officially assume her new role on May 11 following the state’s required 21-day waiting period after being named the sole finalist.

The decision reflects what board leadership described as strong alignment and confidence in Dr. Ballabina’s vision. “Our unanimous vote reflects a clear sense of direction for Texas A&M,” said Board Chairman Robert L. Albritton. “There is strong momentum already building behind Dr. Ballabina across the university and among those who care deeply about its future, and we are confident she will carry that forward.”

Dr. Ballabina brings more than three decades of experience within the Texas A&M system and the State of Texas. She currently serves as Executive Vice Chancellor, where she has overseen systemwide operations and supported strategic initiatives across multiple universities and agencies.

Her career includes a range of senior leadership roles, including Chief of Staff to the president and Deputy Vice Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer for Texas A&M AgriLife. She has been involved in major statewide efforts, such as the Healthy South Texas initiative and recovery coordination following Hurricane Harvey.

Chancellor Glenn Hegar emphasized her deep understanding of the university’s mission. “Texas A&M has always been defined by its mission and the people who serve it,” Hegar said. “Dr. Ballabina has shown throughout her career that she understands that.”

Dr. Ballabina expressed gratitude for the appointment and optimism about the future. “I’m grateful for the trust placed in me,” she said, adding that she looks forward to working with the Aggie community to build on the university’s strong foundation.

System leaders also thanked Interim President Tommy Williams for his leadership during the transition.
