Canyon ISD coach arrested on DWI charge following traffic stop

An employee of the Canyon Independent School District has been arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated following a weekend traffic stop in Canyon, Texas.

According to the Canyon Police Department, the arrest occurred on May 23 after officers observed a vehicle traveling in the 3500 block of 4th Avenue and failing to maintain a single lane. Officers conducted a traffic stop and later determined that the driver, identified as Raymond Angel Baca, showed signs of intoxication. A blood test was administered as part of the investigation.

Baca, a coach within the Canyon Independent School District, was taken into custody and booked into the Randall County Jail on a charge of driving while intoxicated. The case remains a personnel matter for the district, which confirmed awareness of the incident and noted that it occurred off campus and outside of school hours. District officials indicated they would not provide additional comment, citing personnel privacy considerations.

Baca is widely known in the Canyon community for his long tenure as the head girls cross country and track and field coach at Canyon Independent School District and at Canyon High School. A Canyon High School graduate from the class of 1988, he later earned his degree from West Texas A&M University before beginning his coaching career.

Before returning to Canyon, Baca worked at Hereford High School from 1995 to 2010, where he taught biology and coached multiple sports including cross country, basketball, and track. He returned to Canyon High School in 2010 to lead the girls’ running programs.

Over the course of his career, Baca has held leadership positions in several statewide coaching organizations, including the Texas Girls Coaches Association, where he previously served as president. He has also been involved with other Texas coaching bodies, contributing to cross country and track and field governance and development.

His teams have achieved significant competitive success, including multiple state championships in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Class 4A division, with notable title runs in recent years. He has also received statewide and national recognition for coaching excellence, including honors from track and field coaching associations and finalist consideration for national coaching awards.

Authorities have not released further details regarding the ongoing case.
