Brock eliminates Canyon in regional playoff series

The series with the kind of tension that makes playoff baseball memorable. By the end of Friday, though, the Canyon Eagles were left with the sting of a season cut short.

After surviving a nail-biting opener against Brock with a 5-4 victory Thursday at Odessa College, Canyon could not keep the momentum going. Brock seized control of the series Friday with commanding 7-2 and 13-2 wins to eliminate the Eagles and close Canyon’s season at 27-9-1.

Game 1 hinted at a classic series.

Locked in a 2-2 tie entering the sixth inning, Canyon found the clutch hits it needed. Bayler Schilling delivered an RBI double to put the Eagles ahead, then later scored on a Carson Allen single to extend the lead to 4-2.

Brock threatened until the final out, loading the bases in the seventh before Canyon reliever Keegan McCulloch escaped the jam and secured the save with a game-ending groundout.

The dramatic finish gave the Eagles a spark and positioned them one win away from advancing.

Friday quickly shifted the tone.

Brock responded with urgency in the second game, scoring three runs in the opening inning and never allowing Canyon to settle in. The Eagles fell behind 6-0 before scratching across single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but the deficit proved too large in a 7-2 loss.

With the series tied, the decisive third game never developed into the showdown Canyon hoped for.

Brock struck early again, building a 4-0 advantage in the second inning and extending the lead to 9-2 after four frames. Any hopes of a comeback disappeared when Brock exploded for four more runs in the fifth inning, eventually ending the contest by run rule.

Despite the abrupt ending, Canyon’s season featured consistency, resilience and one of the area’s strongest records. The Eagles repeatedly showed the ability to battle through pressure situations throughout the spring, and their playoff-opening victory against Brock demonstrated the fight that carried them to 27 wins.

In the end, however, Brock’s offense proved too much over the final two games, bringing Canyon’s postseason journey to a close.
