West Texas A&M University has reached a historic milestone, announcing the conclusion of its “One West” fundraising campaign with a total of $208,654,050 raised—making it the most successful fundraising effort in the Texas Panhandle’s history.
University officials said the campaign’s success reflects broad community support, with 13,377 donors contributing since its first major gift in 2017. That initial donation—$24 million from Paul Engler and the Engler Foundation—helped set the stage for what would become a years-long effort to expand opportunities for students, faculty, and the region as a whole.
“We’ve had every measure of donor engaged in this campaign, from tens of millions of dollars to hundreds of dollars,” WT President Walter V. Wendler said.
The campaign supports the university’s long-term strategic plan, “WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World,” which aims to strengthen academic programs, invest in people, and enhance campus facilities. Organized around three priorities—people, programs, and places—the initiative directed a significant portion of funds toward scholarships and academic development.
According to the university, the number of scholarships has doubled during the campaign. At the same time, endowed faculty positions have more than tripled, increasing from roughly 30 to more than 100. These investments are intended to elevate both student access and the university’s academic profile.
The campaign’s final total far exceeded its original goal. When the public phase launched in September 2021, university leaders set a target of $125 million. That goal was reached within 18 months, prompting an increase to $175 million—a benchmark surpassed in September 2025.
“Two hundred million was suggested when we gathered to celebrate the kickoff of this campaign. Nobody believed it was possible,” Wendler continued. “There were doubters in the audience that thought we would never get to $125 million. Now, we’re over $200 million, and I could not be more pleased for the result that we’ve seen.”
University leaders emphasized that the campaign’s impact extends beyond campus boundaries. Many graduates remain in the Texas Panhandle, contributing to key sectors such as education, healthcare, and local industry. Officials say the campaign’s investments are designed not only to benefit students but also to strengthen the regional workforce.
“When we get a student at WT, our intention is when they graduate, they’ll succeed right here in the Panhandle,” said Dr. Todd Rasberry, vice president for philanthropy and external relations and executive director of the WTAMU Foundation. “People’s investment at this institution is also an investment in their communities.”
Rasberry credited the campaign’s success to widespread donor participation across the region.
“The credit goes to the donors of the Panhandle,” he said. “They are the ones that made it happen.”
The university formally marked the campaign’s conclusion with a donor celebration held April 16 at the Piehl-Schaeffer Pavilion on the Canyon campus. Additional celebrations are planned, including an on-campus event for students, faculty, and staff scheduled for April 22.
Although the official fundraising total was finalized in December, university officials noted that additional gifts will continue to be recognized in the coming weeks.
“We are here to celebrate and to say thank you,” Rasberry said, addressing donors and supporters. “While many things account for propelling WT into a promising future… it is unquestionable that your generous philanthropic support is vital to making WT a great University.”
