Wonderland Amusement Park kicks off 75th season under new ownership

Wonderland Amusement Park, a staple of Amarillo entertainment since 1951, is opening its gates for the 2026 season under new management, marking a significant chapter in its storied history. The beloved park, known for its family-friendly attractions and classic rides, has been acquired by 360 Parks of Amarillo, following a long-term lease agreement with the city that will allow the company to manage operations and implement improvements while the city retains ownership of the land.

The transition ensures the park will continue its regular operations and seasonal traditions, with plans for enhancements that honor its nostalgic charm while boosting guest experiences. As Wonderland celebrates its 75th anniversary, local excitement is palpable, with hiring events already underway to staff the park for the upcoming season, signaling optimism for both economic impact and community engagement.

Under the new management, Wonderland’s 30-plus rides and attractions are receiving significant attention. Maintenance crews have been busy replacing crumbling concrete, repairing asphalt, repainting buildings, and refurbishing classic rides. Some of the park’s most iconic attractions, including the Tilt-a-Whirl from 1947 and the Texas Tornado roller coaster, have been carefully restored, keeping the park’s history alive while ensuring modern safety standards are met.

The park also plans to introduce new experiences this season. A Crazy Couch ride and a foam cannon area are being added for children, offering safe, interactive fun. The Himalaya ride will feature a renowned operator who adds an energetic flair to the experience, bringing both entertainment and excitement to guests. Additionally, the Balloon Ride has been updated with new balloons, and the miniature golf course is being completed after material delays.

Wonderland’s roller coaster collection includes some rare prototypes. These rides strengthen Wonderland’s reputation as a destination for roller coaster fans, complementing its appeal to families and casual visitors alike.

Alongside rides, the park is improving its guest amenities. A new season pass priced at $59 allows unlimited access to all attractions, while group rates offer discounted pricing for larger parties. A Spectator pass provides access to gentler rides like the train and merry-go-round. Plans are also underway for a sit-down pizza restaurant and landscaped areas with grassy spaces, flowers, and artistic installations, adding to the park’s visual appeal and comfort.

With approximately 650,000 visitors each year, Wonderland anticipates attendance growth due to its updates, better landscaping, and enhanced attractions. Around 130 teenagers will join the summer workforce, reflecting both local employment opportunities and the park’s role as a community hub.

Looking ahead, Wonderland is exploring expansion possibilities. Additional land near the current park could allow for a full water park in the next few years, promising a new dimension of entertainment while managing operational costs effectively. This forward-looking approach aims to keep Wonderland competitive and relevant in the broader Texas Panhandle amusement market, which currently has few large outdoor amusement parks.

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, with the 75th-anniversary grand opening set for Friday at 1 p.m. Early-season operations will run Fridays through Sundays, gradually expanding as preparations are finalized. With decades of history, a new wave of management, and a lineup of classic and modern attractions, Wonderland Amusement Park is positioned to remain a cherished destination for families and thrill-seekers alike.
