West Texas Ranch Rodeo returns to Amarillo with new events and high-stakes competition

The West Texas Ranch Rodeo returns to Amarillo this week, bringing with it a packed schedule of competitions, family-friendly activities, and a notable new addition that reflects the evolving landscape of ranch rodeo culture.

Hosted at the Amarillo National Center and the Vance Reed Livestock Building, the multi-day event draws competitors from across the United States. Participants will compete in a range of traditional ranch rodeo events, while attendees can enjoy activities designed to highlight the heritage and skills of working ranch life.

Among the featured attractions is the world championship blacksmith competition, a showcase of craftsmanship that continues to be a staple of the event. In addition, youth rodeos, team roping competitions, and 4-H events will give younger participants a chance to demonstrate their abilities and connect with the traditions of the ranching community. Several of these events will be free to attend, making the rodeo accessible to families throughout the region.

The main rodeo performances are scheduled to begin Friday night at 7 p.m. and will continue into Saturday. This year’s competition will feature a one-go format, meaning each competitor has a single opportunity to perform in each event. The structure increases the pressure on teams, as even minor mistakes can significantly impact final standings. Organizers say this format heightens the excitement for both participants and spectators, creating a more intense and unpredictable competition environment.

Twenty of the nation’s top ranch teams are expected to compete, each vying for a coveted return to Amarillo for the world championship. The high level of competition, combined with the one-chance format, is anticipated to create an electric atmosphere inside the arena.

A major highlight of this year’s rodeo is the debut of women’s ranch bronc riding in Amarillo. The addition marks a significant milestone for the sport, which has seen growing participation and recognition in recent years. The inclusion of women riders not only expands the event’s competitive field but also provides new opportunities for athletes and inspires younger generations interested in entering the sport.

Beyond the arena, the rodeo is expected to have a meaningful economic impact on the Amarillo community. Organizers anticipate that hundreds of visitors will travel to the city, supporting local businesses such as restaurants, retail shops, and hotels. The influx of visitors underscores the rodeo’s role as both a cultural celebration and a driver of regional tourism.

Additional entertainment will include a concert scheduled for Saturday, adding to the weekend’s festivities and giving attendees more ways to engage with the event.

With a blend of tradition, competition, and new opportunities, this year’s West Texas Ranch Rodeo aims to deliver an exciting experience for participants and spectators alike. Tickets for the main performances will be available at the door, while information about the full schedule and additional events can be found on the rodeo’s official website.
