Randall County commissioners held their regular meeting Tuesday, focusing on public safety training and community awareness initiatives.
The commission approved a budget amendment increasing funding for ropes rescue training for the Randall County Fire Department. Fire Chief Joe Koch explained the department will host a specialized training session at the end of May that will bring together crews from across Texas. The course will be led by Reed Thorne, a rope rescue instructor based in Arizona known for technical expertise in high-angle and wilderness operations. The training program reached full capacity, and participant fees exceeded the original budget allocation of 19,960 dollars, according to County Auditor Ravonette Stacey. Total revenue generated from registrations reached 26,250 dollars, allowing for additional financial flexibility. Koch noted that this surplus will effectively cover training costs for several department members.
Koch also reported that the Randall County Fire Department conducted an average of one rescue per week in Palo Duro Canyon and surrounding areas over the past year, underscoring the importance of continued technical rescue preparedness. All agenda items presented during the meeting were approved unanimously with a 5-0 vote.
Commissioners issued two proclamations recognizing April as Child Abuse Prevention Month and Senior Hunger Awareness Month in Randall County. Representatives from The Bridge and the Bivins Foundation attended the meeting in support of the observances, highlighting ongoing community efforts to address vulnerable populations.
The meeting reflected continued focus on emergency response readiness and community welfare initiatives across Randall County, with officials emphasizing collaboration between local organizations, first responders, and county leadership to address both safety training needs and social support programs throughout the region.
