Derby Day Fundraiser Set for May 2

Southwest AMBUCS is now selling tables for its upcoming Kentucky Derby-themed fundraiser, scheduled for May 2 at 3 p.m. at the Amarillo Botanical Gardens. The event will feature reserved table seating only, along with music, dancing, a live auction, and food and beverages. Proceeds support the organization’s work in the Amarillo area, including providing Amtryke therapeutic tricycles and building accessible parks and playgrounds.

Amarillo College Regents to Meet Tuesday

The Amarillo College Board of Regents will meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the College Union Building at 2201 S. Washington. The agenda includes reports from the president and regents, committee updates, and discussion of AC Affiliates. Regents will also consider bids for food delivery services across campus facilities and review a proposal for a new television transmitter for KACV-TV before closing with financial reports and public comment.

State Psychiatric Hospital Construction Advances

Construction continues on the Texas Panhandle’s first state psychiatric hospital at 6610 W. Amarillo Blvd., with the building’s frame now going up after earlier foundation delays. The facility has begun accepting applications for its superintendent, with Potter County Judge Nancy Tanner assisting in the hiring process. The hospital, which broke ground in May 2025, will house 75 patients and is expected to open in late 2027.

Amarillo Man Pleads Guilty in Federal Case

An Amarillo man has pleaded guilty to federal charges following a March 16 traffic stop involving speeding and delayed compliance. Authorities reported discovering multiple bags of marijuana packaged for sale and a .40 caliber handgun in the vehicle. Due to a prior federal conviction, the man was prohibited from possessing a firearm and now faces sentencing at a later date.

Police Warn of “Wrong Number” Text Scam

The Amarillo Police Department is alerting residents to a “wrong number” text scam circulating in the area. Officials say scammers initiate friendly conversations after being told they have contacted the wrong person, eventually attempting to build trust and request money. Residents are advised not to respond to messages from unknown numbers.

Amarillo High Baseball Players Sign to Play Collegiate Level

Amarillo High celebrated the college commitments of five baseball players during a signing ceremony Monday evening, recognizing their next steps in the sport. The athletes include Austin Sluder (Midland College), Tate Blackwell (Seward County Community College), Jimmy Escajeda (Vernon College), Dillon Grider (Kansas Wesleyan University), and Talon Jones (Coastal Bend College).
