The City of Canyon has announced that construction work on a series of public safety facility improvements funded through a $14 million bond approved by voters in May 2025 will begin in the coming months. The investment package allocates funding across multiple departments, including $4.9 million for police facilities, $8.85 million for fire department upgrades, and $250,000 dedicated to renovating the former police station space within City Hall.
City officials indicate that the first phase of construction will focus on major upgrades to the fire department’s infrastructure. Planned improvements include the development of a burn house training facility designed to enhance firefighter preparedness through realistic training environments. Additional upgrades will follow with the construction of a classroom space and a dedicated physical training facility. These enhancements are expected to improve operational readiness and contribute to reduced insurance risk ratings. In turn, the improvements are projected to generate credit benefits through the Insurance Services Office, which evaluates municipal fire protection capabilities for property and casualty insurers.
Following the initial fire department work, attention will shift to City Hall renovations scheduled to begin during the summer construction period. The former police department area within City Hall will be repurposed to accommodate the Planning and Development Department as well as Public Works staff. The reconfiguration is intended to improve workflow efficiency and centralize key administrative services within the building.
Also slated to begin in the summer are renovations to the new police department facility located at 1401 Fourth Street, formerly known as the Gold Star building. Once completed, the updated police headquarters will feature expanded office space and a redesigned layout to better support law enforcement operations. Planned interior improvements include three interview rooms, two investigation rooms, a monitoring room, and a designated soft interview room intended for sensitive or trauma-related cases. These additions are designed to improve both investigative capacity and community-focused policing services.
Another key component of the police department expansion involves the construction of a new animal shelter. Currently, the City of Canyon houses stray animals in outdoor kennel runs, but the planned facility will provide both indoor and outdoor housing areas. The upgrade is expected to improve animal welfare conditions while supporting more effective animal control services for the community.
Looking further ahead, additional phases of construction are scheduled to begin in 2027. These include renovations to the basement level of the new police department, further expansion of fire department dormitory and living spaces, and the installation of a Safe Haven baby box designed to provide a secure and anonymous option for infant surrender in emergency situations.
According to the project timeline released by the City of Canyon, all construction associated with the bond program is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The coordinated improvements across multiple public safety departments reflect a long-term effort to modernize infrastructure, enhance emergency response capabilities, and support growing operational demands across the city.
