The Amarillo VA will host the Nourishing Our Heroes Mobile Food Pantry on Saturday, providing food assistance to eligible veterans via a drive-through event. Volunteers will distribute pre-packed food boxes from the High Plains Food Bank as vehicles pass through a route near the main entrance on Amarillo Boulevard from 10 a.m. to noon.
Organizers require participants to present a valid military identification card to receive assistance. Because this is the program’s first local event, staff will use identification checks to track distribution and ensure accurate accounting of each household served. Officials emphasized that benefits must be collected in person by veterans to maintain program integrity and improve future planning.
The initiative builds on a successful pilot launched in Lubbock last year and has since been expanded to Amarillo through the Department of Veterans Affairs Whole Health program. Coordinators say data gathered from attendance will help determine demand and guide future pantry events in the region.
In addition to the drive-through service, Amarillo VA staff plan to assist veterans who are unable to travel. Dietitians and public health personnel will deliver food boxes directly to homebound veterans, ensuring access for those with mobility or transportation challenges.
Community members interested in volunteering are encouraged to contact VA staff for opportunities. Organizers note help is needed in a variety of roles including assisting with distribution, organizing paperwork, and verifying identification.
Food insecurity remains a significant concern among veterans, with estimates suggesting roughly one in nine working-age veterans experience limited access to adequate nutrition. Contributing factors often include employment challenges, financial instability, and housing insecurity.
