Opening night in the Amarillo Civic Center had all the ingredients for a memorable showdown. The Amarillo Warbirds welcomed fans for their first home game of the 2026 season Friday night, squaring off against the undefeated Sioux City Bandits in a matchup that promised early-season drama. Both teams entered the night without a loss, but by the final whistle it was Sioux City leaving the arena with momentum after a decisive 53–6 victory.
The Bandits wasted no time setting the tone. Quarterback Lorenzo Brown engineered the opening drive and capped it with a touchdown pass that gave Sioux City an early edge. The visitors kept their foot on the gas soon after, leaning on their rushing attack. Running back Fred Bruno broke through a gap, raced downfield, and finished the drive in the end zone to stretch the lead.
Amarillo’s best moment came later when quarterback Wes Jones connected with receiver Jay Palmer in the corner of the end zone. The touchdown energized the home crowd and briefly brought life to the Warbirds’ sideline. Unfortunately for Amarillo fans, it would be the team’s only score of the night as Sioux City continued to control the pace on both sides of the ball.
Despite the lopsided result, the atmosphere inside the arena showed just how excited the community is to have arena football back in Amarillo. The Warbirds are beginning their inaugural season in the city after relocating from Odessa and joining the National Arena League. The organization has focused on making games an interactive experience, featuring contests and entertainment designed to keep fans engaged throughout the night.
There is still plenty of football ahead. Amarillo opened the season with a thrilling 33–32 road win over the Shreveport Rouxgaroux in Louisiana, proving this team can battle in tight games.
