On Monday, Gov. Greg Abbott announced the launch of the Texas Jobs Council, a new advisory group focused on strengthening workforce development across the state.
The council is designed to address growing demand for skilled labor in key industries that underpin Texas’ booming economy. Among the priority occupations identified are electricians, pipe fitters, welders, plumbers, and truck drivers—jobs that continue to see high demand as population growth and business expansion accelerate statewide.
State leaders are positioning the initiative as a collaborative effort between industry and government to ensure Texas remains competitive in attracting and retaining businesses. By aligning workforce training programs with employer needs, the council aims to create clearer pathways into stable, well-paying careers for Texans.
A major component of the council’s work will involve identifying and reducing regulatory barriers that may slow workforce development efforts. Members are expected to explore executive actions that streamline training and certification processes, while also preparing formal recommendations for lawmakers ahead of the 90th Texas Legislative Session.
In addition to regulatory reform, the group will evaluate existing workforce programs and propose strategies to improve efficiency and accessibility. This includes expanding opportunities for technical education and apprenticeships, particularly in sectors facing persistent labor shortages.
The Texas Jobs Council plans to deliver a comprehensive final report in November. That report will outline both executive actions and legislative proposals aimed at strengthening the state’s workforce system and ensuring it can meet future economic demands.
