Canyon ISD bus investigation: 17-year-old faces child indecency charges

A troubling case out of Randall County has drawn significant attention following the release of new court documents detailing alleged criminal activity involving a high school student on a school bus. Authorities say the incident, which reportedly occurred during a return trip from a baseball tournament, has led to serious charges against a 17-year-old student.

According to court records, the alleged events took place on February 27 as the junior varsity baseball team from Randall High School was traveling back from Lubbock. Investigators say the incident happened aboard the team’s school bus and was captured both by onboard surveillance equipment and student cell phones. The presence of multiple recordings has played a key role in the investigation.

Officials with the Amarillo Police Department reportedly reviewed the video evidence and were able to identify the suspect as Ayden Sanning. Following the investigation, authorities determined there was sufficient evidence to pursue charges.

On March 19, the Randall County Sheriff’s Office arrested Sanning, who is now facing six felony counts. These include three counts of indecency with a child by sexual contact and three counts of indecency with a child by exposure. The charges stem from allegations that Sanning exposed himself to a minor and forced inappropriate physical contact for the purpose of sexual gratification.

Because of the severity of the accusations, Sanning is being charged as an adult. His bond has been set at $25,000, and he has since been released under strict conditions. Those conditions include no contact with the alleged victim or witnesses, a prohibition on interacting with anyone under the age of 17, adherence to a nightly curfew, and bans on possessing weapons or using drugs and alcohol. He is also restricted from engaging in any sexual activity involving minors.

Investigators have emphasized that the case remains ongoing. The Criminal Investigations Division of the Randall County Sheriff’s Office continues to gather information, though officials note that details are limited due to the involvement of juveniles. Search warrants executed on additional cell phones belonging to individuals on the bus reportedly uncovered further video evidence, potentially strengthening the case.

The incident has also raised questions about student supervision during school-related travel. Canyon Independent School District has stated that it is fully cooperating with law enforcement authorities. District officials reiterated that school buses are considered an extension of the classroom environment, meaning students are expected to follow the same behavioral standards as they would on campus.

The district also highlighted that bus drivers are responsible not only for transportation but for maintaining order and ensuring appropriate conduct among students. However, due to privacy laws, school officials have declined to release additional details about the situation.

As the investigation continues, the case has sparked concern among parents and community members about student safety and oversight during extracurricular travel. Authorities have indicated that further updates may be limited while the legal process unfolds, but the seriousness of the allegations ensures that the case will remain under close scrutiny in the weeks ahead.
