Ghislaine Maxwell seeks clemency before answering questions about Epstein

Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted accomplice of Jeffrey Epstein, has indicated that she possesses information that could address allegations involving former Presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton. Maxwell’s attorney, David Oscar Markus, said she is willing to answer questions about Epstein and related claims, but only if Trump grants her clemency first.

In his opening statement to the House Oversight Committee, Markus told lawmakers that “both President Trump and President Clinton are innocent of any wrongdoing,” according to the New York Post. Markus later posted on X that “Ms. Maxwell alone can explain why, and the public is entitled to that explanation,” adding that “only she can provide the complete account.”

Maxwell testified before the committee on Monday but invoked her Fifth Amendment rights, declining to answer questions during the deposition. The Fifth Amendment protects individuals against self-incrimination in criminal proceedings.

“We had many questions to ask about the crimes she and Epstein committed — as well as questions about potential co-conspirators,” House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) said after the session. “We sincerely want to get to the truth for the American people and justice for survivors. That’s what this is about.”

Markus said that Maxwell would like to provide answers regarding Trump and Clinton but would do so fully only if clemency is granted. The White House has stated that clemency is not currently being considered.

Maxwell was convicted in 2021 on five counts related to sex trafficking connected to Epstein and sentenced the following year to 20 years in federal prison. In August 2025, she was transferred from a federal prison in Florida to a medium-security camp in Texas.

Responses from lawmakers have been mixed. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) wrote on X that Maxwell should return to “the maximum security prison where she belongs.” In previous testimony to the Deputy Attorney General, Maxwell stated that she “never witnessed [Trump] in any inappropriate setting in any way.”

The House Oversight Committee continues its investigation into Epstein’s network and connections to influential figures. Chair Comer has said he plans to have both Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testify. According to reports from the Department of Justice, Bill Clinton appeared in photos with Epstein and Maxwell and flew on Epstein’s private jet multiple times; his spokesperson has described the flights as part of humanitarian trips to Africa.

Hillary Clinton is scheduled to testify before the Oversight Committee on Feb. 26, and Bill Clinton is set to appear on Feb. 27. If the hearings proceed as planned, it would mark the first time lawmakers have compelled a former president to testify.
