West Plains quarterback Reid Macon commits to WT

West Texas A&M head football coach Josh Lynn made a significant statement on the recruiting trail Friday by securing a commitment from West Plains quarterback Reid Macon, a player whose resume speaks for itself and whose impact has already been felt across the Texas Panhandle. It is the kind of addition that makes sense on every level: production, leadership, familiarity with the area, and a proven ability to win.

Macon’s decision to stay close to home and play in Canyon comes after visits to several programs, including UTEP, Abilene Christian, Midwestern State, and Colorado Mesa. Ultimately, the chance to continue his career in his own backyard, combined with a clear opportunity at West Texas A&M, proved to be the right fit. For Lynn, it is the payoff of closely monitoring a quarterback who has been impossible to ignore for the past four seasons.

By the time Macon wrapped up his high school career at West Plains, he had already cemented himself as one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in Texas high school football history. He became the only four-year starter at the position in program history and finished as the school’s all-time winningest quarterback. Across 55 career starts, he led the Wolves to a 42-13 record, multiple deep playoff runs, and back-to-back district championships.

Statistically, Macon’s career numbers are eye-opening. He finished with 11,856 passing yards, completing 905 passes on 1,331 attempts, while accounting for 120 total touchdowns against just 23 interceptions. His senior season alone showcased his growth as a complete offensive weapon, throwing for 2,749 yards and 30 touchdowns while adding 681 rushing yards and 17 scores on the ground. Those numbers reflect not just volume, but efficiency and decision-making, traits that translate well to the next level.

What makes Macon’s story even more impressive is where it began. When West Plains opened its doors in 2022, the coaching staff handed the offense to a 145-pound freshman and trusted him to lead a brand-new program. Over the next four years, Macon rewarded that trust by growing physically, mentally, and emotionally into the centerpiece of the Wolves’ success. His development allowed the offense to evolve, expanding responsibilities at the line of scrimmage and putting more control in his hands as his experience grew.

That experience showed most clearly in high-pressure moments. West Plains reached the Class 4A Division I state semifinals in 2024 and followed it with a quarterfinal appearance in 2025. Along the way, the Wolves knocked off established programs like Brownwood, Lampasas, and Stephenville, proving they belonged on the state stage. In the semifinal loss to Celina, Macon went head-to-head with one of the state’s top quarterbacks and nearly pushed West Plains into the state championship game, a testament to his competitiveness and poise.

College coaches value winning as much as raw talent, and Macon checks both boxes. He is ranked among the top passers in Texas high school history, sitting inside the top 10 on Dave Campbell’s all-time career passing yards list across all classifications. That list includes some of the biggest names in the sport, underscoring just how productive his career has been.

For West Texas A&M, Macon represents more than just a talented arm. He brings leadership, durability, and a proven winning mindset to a program looking to build momentum. He arrives as a mature quarterback who has seen nearly every situation a game can present, from playoff pressure to late-game adversity. Those qualities are hard to teach and invaluable at the college level.

Josh Lynn did not have to look far to find his next signal-caller. By keeping Macon home, West Texas A&M gains a quarterback who already understands the culture, the community, and the expectations. It is a common-sense recruiting win and a move that could pay dividends for the Buffs for years to come.
